FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

1. What age can my child start piano lessons?
I recommend starting piano lessons around 5 to 7 years old, but every child is different! For younger students, lessons are designed to keep things engaging, fun, and interactive from the very beginning.
2. How long are piano lessons?
I offer 30 minute lessons, which I’ve found to be the ideal length for children. This short focused session helps them stay engaged, ensuring a productive and enjoyable lesson.
3. Do you offer beginner piano lessons for children?
Yes! I specialise in beginner lessons for kids of all ages. Whether your child is starting on the keyboard or the piano, lessons will focus on building a solid foundation in note reading, rhythm, chords, and basic music theory.
4. Do you teach neurodivergent children?
Yes I welcome neurodivergent children with Autism Spectrum Disorder, ADHD or other profile and tailor lessons to meet their pace and interests. Neurodivergent children often but not always have excellent pitch which gives them a unique base to start lessons. They often benefit from an approach that works to their strengths as traditional approaches can be overwhelming. If you have specific goals or needs in mind I'm happy to work with you to create the right learning environment.
5. Do lessons follow school terms?
Yes, lessons follow the school terms, with a break during the holidays. This makes it easy for families to plan, and your child will progress at a comfortable and consistent pace.
6. What method do you use to teach?
I use a balanced approach to piano teaching, combining classical fundamentals with modern music. My lessons incorporate simple technical exercises, rhythm work, note reading and chords and creative play including pop songs the students know. The keyboard or piano is always used as a tool to help students grow musically, while keeping lessons enjoyable.
7. Will my child take exams?
Taking exams is optional. Some students enjoy working towards AMEB exams, while others simply play for fun. It all depends on your child’s goals and interests, and we can decide together what’s best for them.
8. How do I book a lesson?
To book a lesson, simply send through an enquiry on the contact form or email me!
9. Can you help my child play pop music on the piano or keyboard?
Yes, I love incorporating pop music into lessons! Whether your child wants to play Billie Eilish, Ed Sheeran, or Taylor Swift, I’ll teach them how to play chords, melodies, and even sing along—it's a lot of fun! Every song can be played at different difficulty levels and there are many learning elements in every song.
10. How can I help my child play more at home?
It’s important for your child to develop a regular practice routine at home, and I’m happy to provide tips for making it enjoyable. Together we set small, achievable goals each week. You can help by ensuring their piano or keyboard is set up in a quiet, comfortable space for playing and getting excited hearing your child play - a little each day is the way!
11. Is there a difference between piano and keyboard lessons for beginners?
The primary difference is that pianos have more keys, different feel and sound. Both instruments provide the foundation for learning music. Whether your child learns on the keyboard or piano, the skills they gain will transfer to either instrument.
